In this week’s episode of The Ear, we travel back to the beginning of Columbia’s history—the alma mater of our alma mater: King’s College. Despite the fact that we live in John Jay and march up the stairs in Hamilton, it’s important to remember that Columbia’s history involved a far more politically diverse cast of characters than our campus has chosen to enshrine. In our journey into Columbia’s prehistory, we unearth the loyalist roots that underpin our University’s revolutionary legacy, we tell the stories that sit in the shadows of the Alexander Hamilton epochs, and we examine whether King’s College is a part of Columbia’s history or just a distant ancestor that we have incorporated in our narrative.
